Great flick. Subtle, yet entertaining. Poignant yet funny. And some great acting, not just from Nicholson and Fletcher, but from that ridiculously awesome supporting cast as well.
I think the film lacked a bit of the depth and complexity of Kessey's book, but that's inevitable with any novel-to-screen adaptation. All in all, I think it's really well done.
the film was 180 degrees different than keseys novel, it was based more on the stage play i believe. kesey walked away early in the shoot and vowed to never see it. i think it is a beautiful film.
Yeah, it's definitely a classic story of author hating the film adaptation. Though I wouldn't say they're completely different (a lot of key themes and elements from the book are definitely in there)the fact that the narrative viewpoint is completely different between the book and film is a bit strange. It's pretty damn well impossible to translate some of Kessey's formalism to the screen though, so it's inevitable that they'd have to make some pretty severe alterations.
I'm sorry to say that I haven't read the book . . . going back on my rule so soon! For those that have, which do you prefer and why? I have to say I loved the film. A full but sparsely told story, expertly acted by a well cast group of subtle actors, the film has an Altman-esque quality that sits very well with this RA fan!
Touching and Jack is great. The soundtrack was a little, hmmm, random in parts? Though I would like to have it on vinyl . . .
